A folk play for all ages.

The re-enactment of the troll wedding is held in the second weekend of August of every year. The play is performed by the amateur actors of Äppelbo and is a co arranged by Äppelbo Hembygdsförening.Premiere in 1935The troll wedding, wich was written by Herbert Grönfall from Äppelbo, premiered in 1935 and is thereby Sweden ́s oldest folk play. From the restart in 1971 the play has been visited yearly by 3-4000 people. The stage that you can see on front of you might need some comments. In the middle you can see the “fäbod” (summer farm) of the family in the play, the house and the stable. To the right you can see the troll mountain. Here the trolls live and here they plan their evil deeds. To the left is the house of the family in the village, which comes into the story at the end of the play.

Act 1
One day in the beginning of may the farmer Lars Ersson, his wife Kerstin and their daughter Karin are traditionally moving their cattle from their home in the village to their fäbod in Brudskogen, 6 miles south of Äppelbo. There in Brudskogen the daughter is to spend the whole summer alone with the cows and the sheep. The rest of the act shows how the family is preparing the place for the summer, with father Lars chopping wood and the mother and daughter chatting about boys that might visit Karin on weekends. Karin and her mother are both in favor of Nils from Äppelbo, who is poor but a good and honest man, while the father would rather see the rich, but quite boring, Olof from the neighboring village. They are also talking about all the mysterious things that have happened here in the old days when the mother was a young girl. Karin however doesn’t believe in stories about trolls, gnomes and other beings. The act ends with the parents leaving to go back to the village, and Karin singing a song about sitting alone in the woods being afraid of all the things around her.

 Act 2

Some of Karin’s friends from the village come to visit her, and they are having a party with lots of eating and drinking. Among the visitors is also Olof, the rich man from the neighboring village, but as he tries to stay with Karin when the other leave, Karin is immediately chasing him away, since she is waiting for her beloved to come, which he does.

Act 3
The rich Olof returns to convince Karin about the advantages of money, land and lots of cattle...

Act 4
Meanwhile, the trolls have spotted the girl from their caves deep under the mountain. The Mountain King oldest son, Jehul, finds the young, fair girl very interesting, and decides that he wants her as his bride. While they plan the kidnapping, the king orders a bridal crown of purest gold from a great smith, and as the crown is delivered they arrange a celebration for all their friends in the woods. Arriving to this party is also a poor troll that doesn’t live with in the mountain as the rest. As he is not wanted by the other trolls, they drive him away, but he swears to revenge himself. The party starts and goes on until the sun is about to rise, when all the trolls have to hurry back into their caves, because trolls are afraid of the sun and will turn to stone if they are caught by the sunbeams.

Act 5
The last act needs three comments. Please note the key role of the dog which runs home to the village to notify the boyfriend Nils that something is wrong, so he can run to the girl’s home, take her fathers horse and ride to rescue her. The troll that is helping him is the same one that was thrown out from the troll’s party earlier. The axe above the door is to prevent the trolls from escaping this way. Trolls can’t stand steel.Have a nice evening – but dress for a cold one!Welcome!

Trollbröllopet

Koboldhochzeit, ein Freilichspiel um die Legende von Äppelbos Brautkrone.

Akt 1
